Pre-address era

Back in the day before people adorned their houses with numbers for easier identification, how would they have described their houses to invite a mate over for a pint? Fear not, there are other ways of creating an individual personality for one's abode. Take this detail over the doorway, for example. And just a few doors up is another detail of a devil head. Farther down the street is a sheep's head, a very typical symbol used in alchemy. Then along came Joseph II in 1770 and spoiled all the fun by introducing what is now our modern system of numerical addresses. Phooey!
