Pre-address era
Back in the day before people adorned their houses with numbers for easier identification, how would they have described their houses to invite a mate over for a pint? Fear not, there are other ways of creating an individual personality for one's abode. Take this detail over the doorway, for example. And just a few doors up is another detail of a devil head. Farther down the street is a sheep's head, a very typical symbol used in alchemy. Then along came Joseph II in 1770 and spoiled all the fun by introducing what is now our modern system of numerical addresses. Phooey!
from gargoyle hunter to over the doorway detail hunter....just call me OTDDH (hmmm sounds like a chemical or a disease)...maybe it's good he introduced numbers.
