To Vienna

My Vienna experience began with my very own train compartment. Consequently, out popped the laptop DJ in me. Can't beat singing along to vintage Bowie on the "Franz Schubert Express" while watching the Czech and Austrian countryside whip by. European trains rock!

Fresh off the train, I hit the Vienna subway - the U-Bahn. While trying to figure out my coordinates, a nice young guy approached me to enquire whether I needed help. I explained what was my destination and he uttered something that sounded like "Wine-sszz". Upon asking him whether that was a station where I needed to transfer, he looked at me as if I'd been dropped on my head. "Wine-sszz", he repeated, nicht "WINE-SSZZ". "Aba das ist Wine-sszz!", I replied. By now he was doing some kind of funky 2-step which I seriously doubt was his happy dance. "Nein, nein...OOH-EINZ". "Ahhhhhh" I said, the lightbulb finally glowing bright. All along he'd been sayng U-1 as in the U1 U-Bahn line. Imagine some foreigner who can barely speak ur language trying to understand ur mexican jumping bean antics as u hopelessly chant "number 1 line, NUMBER 1 LINE"!! So much for my stellar German.
